Use this sewing supplies guide to help you sort through what a need vs want is for beginner sewers. Then, once you have gathered those needs and have sewn a few beginner sewing projects, it may be time to add a few extra wants to your sewing box. I will walk you through what sewing supplies you actually need and what sewing tools you can save for later.

PS. Did you know that sewing supplies or sewing tools are actually called sewing notions?! Let me know in the comments!

  1. I started with the basic singer m1000 machine. I just got my daughter the singer patchwork plus for Christmas and I canโ€™t go back to the m1000. The patchwork is so much easier to use! A good machine makes things so much easier and enjoyable!

  2. Dollar tree has nifty little containers with small compartments. I put two bobbins in each compartment. For under two bucks itโ€™s a win. You can make a pin holder with a magnetic dish also from Dollar Tree, or add cheap magnets to the bottom of a small metal dish. I studied fashion design at George Brown college. My favorite sewing machine is a vintage singer. It has lots of fancy stitches that Iโ€™ll never use but more importantly no electronics to go bad, and finding parts is never a problem,. Mine is a singer 500 and I just inherited my mother-in-lawโ€˜s Singer 504. I keep one with white thread, the other with black and change when necessary. The 500, I bought from marketplace for $35, but I gave the owner another $20 or $25 worth of my handmade soap. Both machines have metal belts like a bicycle chain instead of rubber or plastic and both came with tables. I also have a chair with wheels, the seat lifts up to open the storage large compartment. My mother-in-lawโ€™s ironing board was metal with adjustable height. She had it lowered so she only had to pivot to iron rather than stand lol. Unfortunately, my ironing board is also vintage and made with heavy wood, so not adjustable. But I found a portable ironing mat at a thrift store, super cheap so I keep that on the sewing machine Iโ€™m not using. This allows me to pivot between sewing machines and ironing small things. My mother-in-law sewed with a small pair of scissors in her hand always. At George Brown, I was taught to sew with an awl in my hand. I keep a selection of old knitting needles and chopsticks, in one of my drawers(5 between the 2 tables) for turning. Hope this helps someone else think outside the box.

  3. I just bought my first sewing machine! A Bernina 830 8 series sewing and embroidery machine! Itโ€™s been so fun learning on it!

  4. As an avid pencil user: sounds like you need a better sharpener. Blades wear out and make people put a lot of lateral strain on the pencil breaking the lead. You don’t need to buy a $50 pencil sharpener, decent ones are still pretty cheap. If you have had the same one for years, ask yourself how well a razor blade can continue to cut through wood without issues. That’s my protip.

  5. I am completely new to sewing and loving your videos! โค However, a surge protector will not protect your machine from a static discharge. It protects it from a surge from the outlet. Computer technicians have other tools that can discharge static. I recommend contacting a computer store for guidance. ๐Ÿ˜Š
